Two different things called “double-click speed”

This term covers two genuinely different questions, and it’s worth being clear about which one you’re actually after. One is the hardware question — is your mouse accidentally registering two clicks from a single press, a wear-related fault covered in detail on the Mouse Click Test page. The other, and what this page is about, is the deliberate one: how quickly can you click twice in a row, and does that match what your operating system expects a double-click to look like. Every computer has a setting, usually buried a few menus deep, that defines exactly how close together two clicks need to be before the system treats them as one double-click action rather than two separate single clicks. Testing your own natural pace against that setting is a genuinely practical thing to check, and one most people have never actually done deliberately — they either never notice a mismatch, or they notice the symptom (a file that won’t open, a word that won’t select) without ever connecting it back to this specific, easily adjustable setting.

Why double-click recognition exists as a setting at all

A double-click and two separate single-clicks look identical to your mouse hardware — the operating system is the thing deciding, after the fact, whether two click events happened close enough together in time to count as one double-click. Whatever CPS that produces gives you an approximate average interval between clicks: 1000 ÷ your CPS = approximate milliseconds between clicks. A result of 2.0 CPS implies roughly a 500ms interval; 4.0 CPS implies roughly 250ms. This is a genuine approximation rather than a precision single-pair measurement, and it’s worth treating it that way — but it’s accurate enough to tell you whether your natural pace sits comfortably inside your OS’s current threshold or right at the edge of it.

Age and fine-motor control. Double-click interval is one of the more consistently studied fine-motor timing measures in human-computer interaction research, and it reliably lengthens somewhat with age — not dramatically for most people, but enough that a threshold tuned for a younger user’s pace can become a genuine daily friction point later on.

Hand conditions and dexterity. Arthritis, tremor, and other conditions affecting fine motor control can meaningfully slow natural double-click pace. If your tested pace runs meaningfully slower than your current threshold, widening it is a completely reasonable fix, not a workaround for a problem — the default was never based on your specific hand, it’s a platform-wide guess.

On Windows, the Mouse Properties dialog’s Buttons tab has a “Double-click speed” slider with a live test area — you can literally double-click the folder icon shown there and see immediately whether the current setting recognizes your pace.

On macOS, the Trackpad or Mouse settings panel has an equivalent slider, generally with fewer discrete steps than Windows but the same basic effect — moving it toward “Slow” widens the acceptance window.

Where the double-click gesture came from

“My mouse controls double-click speed.” Mostly not.
